Träume is the debut solo album from rising-star dramatic soprano Jenufa Gleich of arias and songs by Richard Wagner. It features famous arias from characters such as Brünnhilde (The Ring Cycle), Senta (The Flying Dutchman) and Elisabeth (Tannhäuser) as well as an aria from his less well-known early opera Die Feen. It concludes with the exquisite Wesendonck Lieder. The disc explores the bel canto aspect of Wagners often-heroic music, taking its cue from Wagners desire for his works to be a German form of this Italian style.

Götterdämmerung (Twilight of the Gods) is the epic fourth and final opera of Wagner’s great Ring cycle, with a plot that depicts the fall of heroes, gods, and the entire world. As ever with the Ring, the joys of love are all too fragile and fleeting, and the drama of Götterdämmerung revolves around dark and unsettling reversals of fortune and illusions of hope that synthesize thrilling and powerful grand opera traditions with Wagner’s revolutionary techniques. Containing all of the Ring’s essential elements, Götterdämmerung possesses a profoundly satisfying sense of inevitability that makes it both a towering climax and a unified summation of the Ring’s abundant variety.

A pleasure… exquisite piano singing… singing with beauty and grace… I’d like to hear her in this full role (Elisabeth/Tannhäuser)… I look forward to hearing more from her.

The voice soars … an appealing voice, clear and unmannered … negotiates its athletic contours impressively … a total success.

This is at one and the same time a surprisingly and unexpectedly successful disc. Perhaps I should begin by qualifying the first two of these adjectives. Surprising? Well,…
The best of them (Wesendonck-Lieder) is Träume to which she brings all her skills as a bel canto-trained singer to Wagner's languorous musical Line.

...with competitors at every fence and with very great performances from Flagstad and Ludwig to Nina Stemme and Susan Bullock leading the field. Yet Gleich takes the orchestra version of these five lieder in her stride.

The Wagner arias in this recital are anything but the familiar calling cards from a singer looking to make her mark. It was courageous of the American soprano Jenufa Gleich to begin with Ada’s aria “Weh’ mir, so nah’ die fürchterliche Stunde” from Die Feen. It’s a hugely demanding number from a young composer determined to storm the operatic heights, but Gleich has the measure of its vocal scale.

Senta is a role that has traditionally defeated many sopranos, with its contrasts of lyric and heroic styles; here the singer triumphantly surmounts all the difficulties which the relatively inexperienced Wagner placed in her way.
